Why turn-based combat just works on a phone
There's a reason so many of the best mobile RPGs are turn-based, and it isn't nostalgia. Turn-based combat doesn't care if you get interrupted. You can pause between moves, put the phone down when the bus arrives, and pick up exactly where you left off without losing a fight you were winning.
Twitch-based games, by contrast, assume your full attention. On a console that's fine. On a phone, where play happens in two-minute bursts, it's a constant source of frustration — one notification and your combo is gone.
Ember of Vael, which we reviewed recently, understands this. Every decision sits there patiently until you're ready, and the depth comes from thinking, not reflexes. That's a design that fits how people actually use their phones.
If you've bounced off mobile RPGs because they felt either too frantic or too grindy, try a turn-based one next. The genre plays to the platform's strengths instead of fighting them.
