What a good puzzle game teaches without telling you

May 9, 2026 · Marta Nowak

The worst puzzle games front-load a tutorial so long you've forgotten half of it by the time you play. The best ones teach through the puzzles themselves, and once you notice the difference you can't unsee it.

Tilewright is a textbook case. It introduces one new idea at a time, lets you fail safely, and only moves on once the concept has clicked. There's barely any text, yet by the tenth board you're juggling rules you were never explicitly told.

This kind of design respects you. It assumes you're smart enough to work things out, and that trust is weirdly motivating. Every solved puzzle feels earned rather than handed over.

If you're designing or just choosing a puzzle game, look for that quiet escalation. A game that teaches through play will keep you engaged long after a tutorial-heavy one has lost you.
